How much does a divorce lawyer cost?

Divorce attorneys typically charge hourly and require a retainer to begin representing a client. The retainer is deposited into the lawyer’s Trust Account and is drawn from only as the lawyer earns money working on the case.

The cost depends in large part on what kind of case it is, and what the parties disagree on.  Typically, child custody cases that go to trial are more expensive than cases involving financial issues, although this isn’t always the case.

A Family Law attorney is who you want to call if you are considering, pursuing, or have been served with papers in a divorce case. Divorce law falls within the broader term of Family Law. Family law includes not only divorce, but also separation, legal issues between couples that are not married but have children together (custody, parenting time, and child support) and/or property together (partnership dissolution), and a number of other matters. In a divorce, many or all of these categories may apply. Divorce lawyers draft and review Pre- and Post-Nuptial agreements on a regular basis, so as to simplify things later on if the marriage ends.

If you are seeking to modify your divorce or your initial custody or parenting time orders, you will need to bring your original judgment and any subsequent orders or judgments from the court with you to our first meeting. This way, I can better understand the legal posture of your case.

The same goes if you have a problem with DHS or other state agency. A review of prior court orders will greatly assist me in giving you sound legal advice.
